Whats a reasonable amt to spend on a DIY setup?
« on: October 08, 2006, 10:13:07 PM »
Hi All,

First off, I like DIY, a lot... ;D

Now DIY systems are usually a trial and error kinda thing because we would rarely have the chance to audition the drivers in mention and we would rely alot on reviews and forums. Thus the cost of taking such a risk is usually the deciding factor for people that venture into DIY Speakers and DIY installs.

What would be the most you would be willing to spend on a DIY system?

Are the any of us here that are currently or have experience using home audio drivers? List them out...lets share guys! ;D

Yeah... it's time consuming, reading around about the drivers, not knowing how much to believe in the internet forum reviews, and finally ordering the stuff and hoping it arrives and suits your taste.

And also, the common problem of people saying "8-ohm drivers will make my amp not enuf power" Don't freak until you try i would say, home drivers sometimes sound sweet even with only 25-50W at 8-ohms!

I agree with that....however there are some drivers that need a good 70W or so at 8 Ohm for it to really sing. Hence its always a gamble when dealing with less used drivers.

What would be the most you would be willing to spend on a DIY system?

Anything that I can afford will be DIY into my car. I hard work mixed with creativity and also trip to installer and standing there for hours trying to learn installation. In the end you can brag more about your system because you did everything from scratch.

Appleyard,

Lots of reading is involved in the DIY game. However it really is a blessing that there are a number of good site out there that provide very detailed and noob friendly information.

I think the main "topic" about DIY setup here is the custom mix and match of different tweeters, midrange, midbass, mid/bass, subwoofer into a setup. Not buying off-the-shelf component sets for the front stage.

;)

Some people might disagree on this though, as most would say the tweeters made for the component set would probably be most suitable ;)

Well, my rading is based mostly on US forums as most pro installer and even IASCA champs will gladly answer your questions, if you ask the right qustions. Up to today I'm still a noobie and still ask questions.

Yep mix and matching. My equipment consist of 5 different brands. Everything does match with each other because all have +ve and -ve terminals for cables. So just plug the cables and see what will happen. No boom.... then you're lucky O0

Master D, on your original topic of what's a reasonable amp for DIY, I'll give my thumbs up to the Abyss CT4.400 without any reservations. Good price and great sound. Why must a DIY system be deprived of good products and good sound?

For the love of god, it's been really since ages that i really WANT to know what's the pricing like but apparently it's not allowed for PM and stuff, it's been ages since i hear that these Abyss CT seemed good for budget and stuff like that, well, at least there should be a ball-park figure for it?

i think the ball park is about RM 2.5k ... but could be from RM2.3k to RM2.7k ... not too sure either...  /07
