hello all...

this question has been pop-up when i am out to look for sub... AFAIK, the larger the sub diameter, the lower it plays and louder too... but most setup i see only use a 12" sub which many claim it is loud as well as low enough.

but why not using 15" sub? would it be better in terms of they play lower Hz and louder? what is your opinion if space is not a problem? 12" or 15" and why?

Theoritically, the larger the diameter, the louder and lower it goes, but that's not the ONLY factor, factors like motor structure also plays a roll, as well as other factors.

Most would go for a 12" as it's sort of like "middle line", decent transcient(read: fast enuf like a 10") and goes low enough(read: so called go low like a 15")

Take my explain with a pinch of salt though, i'm really not good in words.

15" or larger subs have the potential to move more air, go louder and lower but the guestion would be, can it match the front midbass so that the sub does not sound like it's playing by itself fromt he back.

My personal preference. On a budget I would stay away from large diameter woofers unless loudness is the only thing you want. The larger the woofer cone the more opportunity for cone breakup and less control giving a loose bass unless you can find a material and construction stiff enough. Wilson and other high end woofers are exempted  /77

Totally agree with Mike... /64 Anyways, why not your let us know how much you willing to spend on your sub? /103 It would also help if you can let us know your music preference and also u into SQ or SPL... /168

haha, lazy to elaborate further lah on my above posting. Actually I was thinking that it is not only size that matter. LIke Grexer said, it has other factors too, like motor, and also box play an important role.

i am into SQ... loudness is not a concern but some of my experience is tht 12" sometimes is not loud enough for me... but in order to save space i dun wan to put in two 12" as it takes more space than a single 15"... the sub i am using now is helix deep blue 12 pairing with helix H400. box is sealed 1.2cuft.

i am dun wan to change my amp as it will take up more of my budget... budget wise is below RM800 excluding the box.

the music i play is vocalist, audiophile and RnB... the problem persist when i am listening to RnB...

hopefully all the sifu can help me... and one thing i found out also is 15" sub is very limited in the market... not much affordable brands tht i know produce them... so i thing tht would be a problem too... /99

Loud + SQ + Cheap do not come hand in hand. The subwoofer is only but one part of the equation. You will need an amp powerful enough to play it loudly without clipping and with the desired SQ and damping factor.

figure this out too... guess i might hav to wait for a few more months to change my sub... or strike 4d...

question bout how loud... i think i this one is very hard to describe here... well... do you all think tht changing the box help  much? changing to a ported box... will it help on the problem bout loudness? what bout low Hz? scared tht i can achive the loudness but losing the low end...
