Topic: 7909J or 7990J

Dear all sifu2 and ICEers...

Need some advise and suggestion between these 2 HU Alpine 7909J and 7990J, which hu is better in term of SQ. I;m planning to buy either one of this hu as this is still availale in Japan. Lets say age of item is not determining factor...which would you rate the best in term of SQ?

I have been googling and found a lot of great review for 7990J, even has experienced using it

As for 7909J, just found out it has been awarded as Best Ever' CD Receiver Award ( link's below) and also quite number of a very good review of it

im a big fan of the 7909J. never heard of it but i just love oldschoolness of it. how much can u get this baby for in japan? brand new?

7909 very picky on CDs. both are very famous in the world of ICE. i would choose 7990 over 7909 for easier to find spare parts juz in case, not into old skool, sq wise oso very gud, and possibility to add a H900 proc if i wanted to go active.

juz wanna add that the 7990 screen will go cuckoo on u.. missing line, missing dot.. whole screen kaput.. my previous 7990 was missing 3 line, so although i love the HU, i dun wanna spend money to fix the screen which wasnt cheap (check ebay & local price) only to see it spoilt a few months down the road

7990 la hands down....price also so much diff....7909 collector's item only....10 yrs ago of coz la it was the best and quite hard to get, but now technology improve so much..

ok, the 7909J & 7990J still available in Japan but of course 2nd hand la....7909J still a hv few unit but 7990J there is quite number of them available. this is the info I get frm my friends in Japan who normally help me to buy item there

Price for 7909J approx RM1.4k and 7990J approx RM2k. As for 7990J what I heard is a very very very good hu in term of sq but the only problem is the display screen like what bafukie said. 7909J not sure any common problem as tried to google around but could't find any negative feedback

I know a lot ICEer here had experienced using 7990J/R but anyone has experienced with 7909J? hope to get as much input as possible before make my decision on which hu to buy. (just assume price,spare parts,age of item not the determining factor). Just compare in term of SQ wise, which is more superior?

the 7990J isn't a F#1 status ka? SQ wise shud be better la i guess. i have no experience with these 2 HU. both HU looks good. come to think of it, maybe 7990J is the better bet.

my vote, 7990 over 7909... sound wise...

for the screen problem, u can mod the power supply for the screen to avoid such problems. duno how and where to mod, but this is wat they usually do(read on forums).

my vote - 7990 but unfortunately mine is sent to WKH coz the cd mechanism... cant eject the cd inside... hopefully can be fixed...

if u r referring to me. the forum is in russian. and damn hard to find the exact post, millions of posts in the forum. and he neva said how and using wat, juz said by modding the power supply of the screen will solve the problem, maybe juz not as bright as before, but no more burnt pixels.

I didnt have the chance to do A-B comparison. I use them for different setup. I used 7990 on my car and 7909 on my wife's car, before the 7990 cannot eject the cd. Only then I use 7909 on my car.

I do prefer 7990 over 7909. For acoustic musics and female vocals 7990 sounds better compared to 7909. 7909's top end is a bit dull compared

But there is a Thai guy who bought a modded 7909J which he bought from Malaysia. I have to find his email address again to ask how it sounds.

So after careful consideration and compile from all the feedback, i will go for 7990J...since order frm japan i have to wait till next month only for shipment...hhehe...anyway thanks again to all for kind feedback
