It would probably help if you had specified the model number, as Vifa have 3 versions of the ring radiator type and also quite a number of soft domes.

The 3 ring radiators have variances in their characteristics thought 2 of them are similar, namely XT25 and XT25neo, the other model being XT19

From my lil' silly experience with Alpine-Scans D2904-6000 and Alpine-Scanspeak Ring radiator Tw.

F13M-Tw - very easy to accept the sound, although I do find the stage is kinda low, position is very crucial on the height of the Tw and it needs a lot of good juice to push it. Not bright, not mellow.

Z15M-Tw - BIG! 1st impression was the sheer size of it compare to the F13M Tw. Untune, I find it overly laid back and slow to certain extent, tune it right, it creates a lovely rainbow of vocal, if you would prefer. Depth is good and it goes a tad lower than the Vifa. There's a certain airy about this Tw that I like a lot, which is missing from the F13M.

It boils down to preference. Both the Alpine-V/S speakers are good to my dumb ears.  /78

grex,
in general, what are the pros and cons
for both the soft dome and the ring radiator?

say... D27TG-35-06 vs XT25TG-30-04

foo, sorry to correct you, but the both Alpine variants of the tweeters you mentioned are actually from Scanspeak, only that the midrange and midbass drivers of the earlier Pre F#1 flagship are made by Vifa and the F#1 is a full Scanspeak set.

built, as for the D27 vs the XT25, i can't really say much considering i didn't had any experience with the D27(or the currently easily available D19 variant), but for the XT19 and the XT25 variant, i would say they have a very good dispersion, maybe due to the design they have(with the protruding "nipple"), sounded a bit forward for my liking with aimed on-axis, but then again, they don't sound really good off-axis, very directional type of tweeter so u need to get the aiming right, liking it or not actually depends on the type of music u usually listen to i suppose. The closest retail market variant of the XT19 would be the Alpine SPX-177R tweeter and the XT25 being in the Polk SR6500 set. I personally prefer the XT19 over the XT25 for it's sound, doesn't necessarily mean a bigger dome produces a better sound i suppose.
