advise on which sub i should go for~! thx
« on: January 30, 2008, 06:09:21 PM »
hi all sifus.. i'm fresh with ICE.
i plan to buy a subwoofer wif around budget RM450.
currently, the marketplace gave me 2 choices.

12" peerless w/o enclosure, and the other RF p2 12" + enclosure.
wanna ask, which wan is better..?

http://www.icehifi.com/index.php/topic,1348.0.html
http://www.icehifi.com/index.php/topic,1202.msg12782.html#msg12782

i'm listening to all kind of genre. sometime classical, pop, blues, hip-hop rap and ....
i dowan those ahbeng SPL system which only produce loud bassy boom..

as i noe, RF is more towards SPL.
but i audited my fren's fren with a P80rs + RF P2 12" + RF dono which series amp.
the bass sound good. very soft..
but someone tell me RF's bass is kinda hard. when listening to romance song bass will become slamming hard.

pls advise me.
oh ya, sure sifu ask for my current setup.
honestly, i don have good setup. all my items dono is fake or ori.

HU: quite old liao. sony HU, 1 pre-out.
driver: front -> RF fanatic 6.5" mid + hertz dono wat model tweeter.. comes together since the previous user claimed the RF ori tweeter is very high pitch.
rear : got 6"x9", but not using anymore.
amp: cheap cheap chapalang amp. 4 channel. *saving money to upgrade better amp.

driving wira, i edi done some sound proof wif cheap bitumen strip on both side front doors.

Why don't you just bring the manual to a decent shop and tell them to make according to manufacturer recommended specs for a sealed box? Unless you want a specific box shape, that should be the end of it. And don't get the clip on terminals. Get something that you can screw in your cables. And use good cables on the inside (sub to terminal). Here, more confusion for you:

http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/rftech/box_wizard.asp

Use 3/4MDF.

Not to get into technical specifications because most of us will not understand and to put it in simple plain english, Peerless XLS in a sealed box can't really go very low and output can be insufficient although you see the sub working it's pants off. It's not a problem if you listen mainly to techno songs or like tight bass but don't expect to get much low entension from it to enjoy other music genres.

Some EQing does help but becareful not to bottom the sub beyond it's maximum excursion and limit yourself to 100dB and below (many times we do not hear our subs screeming for help and bottoming out while it is in the trunk space). 28L (1cu/ft) like Zenn recommended should be the minimum you should go and if you can afford a little larger that would certainly help get more output from the lower bass region (below 100hz) with a little less EQing. Another option is for you to get the passive radiators to aid the sub in the low frequencies. 2 units is recommended if you can afford them. You may even want to go ported for much better response but there will no protection on the subwoofer excursion if you play insanely loud.

Perhaps you can identify the actual model of your Peerless XLS sub and also let us know what type of bass you're expecting to achieve with these babies.

the peerless model is 830514. 10" subwoofer.
EQing = proper tuning...?
how much for the passive radiator..? any example..? this will cost a bomb for me i think.. as a student la..
by the way, i cant explain what bass i want to achieve as my hearing cant differentiate what is a good bass..  /24
juz wish the sub can perform the best of it..
i think my amp wont exceed 100db coz it juz a cheap cheap amp..
and i don play loud.. volume of music is juz to cover the sounds from outside while driving..

so as what bro mike explained, 1.0-1.1 cu ft is juz good enough for this sub. izit..?
