Wire direct from batt to HU
« on: October 19, 2006, 11:41:03 PM »
Anyone?

If I use thicker wire (8AWG), should I connect the negative wire of HU to a new ground wire (also 8AWG)?

Also would like to here sifus opinion on the pros and cons of doing this.

Thanks.

Since you'll be upgrading your HU's battery to direct from battery using 8awg, it'll be recommended to do a new 8awg grounding(i think this one, if done at reputable places, will try to find the grounding point that's the most direct to the battery without needing to pull a new long ground cable to the battery)

Pros, a more stable dedicated supply lead to the HU, thus, "theoritically" a better sounding HU, fuller vocals and the kind ;D

Cons, never thought of any, maybe in case of a power surge, it *might* fry your HU? But it'll probably fry the fuse from near the battery instead first.

A grand-sifu have mentioned before that putting a small cap(0.5F and below) and a voltage stabilizer before the power reaches the HU will have great results though, try it, you'll be amazed even though it sounded like some bull crap :D

Grexer & Netken sifus, thanks

I'm DIYer, to certain extend, he he... what do you mean by "grounding point that's the most direct to the battery"? Usually at where?

Cons, never thought of any, maybe in case of a power surge, it *might* fry your HU? But it'll probably fry the fuse from near the battery instead first.

I have earlier bought an inline 60A fuses to be put near the battery. Do I need to install another fuse said 1-5A near the HU since HU power cable is only 18AWG? Oh ya, btw I have a TRU F1-B as well.

yeah.. put a helix cap33 and also a pivot VS there... tips from the sifu himself ...

Where can I get the helix cap33? Can recommend which pivot VS?

This is most advisable to avoid direct blowing of the HU ... lol ....

That is why the helix Cap33 also acts as a buffer in the event that the fuse dun blow in time, also the Cap33 or Pivot (Blue) acts as a power conditioner for the HU ....

I think i will try and have a group buy for a Cap33 and see how the response goes...

Your HU existing power cable (yellow in color) should also have a fuse, so when you tap an 8g cable to it (actually 10g is more than sufficient), you should add another small fuse at the front near the battery. A normal automotive fuse 5-10A ones is enough.

Yes, the ground needs to be upgraded as well, the same gauge as upgraded power cables.

Mike tailo,

I got the 8g cable for free. Hehe...

Don't think so my HU has a fuse (if you mean fuse that inline with the power cable).
The choice of fuse near battery...uhh...I thought 40A should be used to protect the short 8g cable?

Which would be the ideal way of upgrading the ground cable?
1. Pull another same gauge but long cable from negative HU to the negative terminal of battery?
2. Use a same gauge but short cable and ground it at vehicle chasis?

if the 8G cable is for the HU alone u need a fuse of similar capacity to the HU, when u take out the HU u will see the fuse at the back.  i prefer grounding the HU shorter route to the chassis.

Usually the shortest possible grounding point near the HU's mounting ;D

As for the Pivot, i believe they are using the Pivot Blue.

So I guess the wiring would be something like this?:

or this?:

Green line = Upgraded wire

I would preferably choose No.1, but with both grounding points at the same location if possible.

Err..not directly into the HU socket. The 8g will connect to one end of the fuse and the other end of the fuse connect to the HU power wire that came out from the socket itself.

For clean install, a distribution block or something equivalent, maybe? DIY? Any suggestion how it is done, oh... mighty sifu?

Oh ya, in my case, where to put the baby cap?
