[NEWBIE REVIEW]-Vishay capacitor mod on my Dynaudio X280
« on: November 15, 2007, 07:58:58 PM »
Guys, Pls dont flame me ya, Im reviewing it base on my opinion.

For those who know me, im quite blur when it come to those technical stuff like reading what db and frequency.
I only know how to listen.

I have been seriously playing ice for about 2years now. lot of money spend and got to know a lot of nice people helping me how to spend those money. :)

Started playing passive then tried active and now back to passive. Why? Hate tuning, cos I can never get it right and need friend for help, but to often also…not nice la,…they also fed dup with me.

Then my dear friend offer to upgrade my x280 passive for free.
By adding two small capacitor. ( VISHAY MKP 1837 )

First impression, warm. Certain song the detail was missing.
The first for me to do is obviously play with amp gain.

Push the (tweeter-Esotar) gain to about 15%.
Was surprised it still sound pretty smooth, still easy to the ear.
But some other track didn’t perform pretty well especially those Chinese song form china recording tend to have more ajinomoto.

Second option, increase only 5% and reposition the tweeter, listen to for about 3hours. Nice….. Even though it didn’t have much improvement but it does change the characteristic of my tweeter.
The original passive already give out a pretty smooth sounding. But adding that capacitor, it got smoother.

I heard is quite affordable. So it should worth a try.
Like dat la…just to share my experience.

First of all, informative review incl. some personal opinions here and there ... kekeke...

I guess most of the time, we try to balance between details / dynamic and smoothness / warmth ...

In your case, there was actually 4 vishays included ... it was only added to 2 xovers that controls the tweeter.

so basically, 2 vishays for each tweeter ... the value used was 0.01uf ...

i doubt the vishays need so much running in - i believe probably 24 hours or more should be okay ...

Those who wish to try out on their original passives can definitely do so as one 0.01uf vishay cost about RM6.00 approx. only ...

we have a AudioP who is also trying out this add-on, hope he can post his review soon also..

for anyone who is interested, i have about 4 - 6 vishays 0.01uf with me ...

i also have 4 x 0.1uf vishay of larger value which i believe it would bring even more smoothness...

another plus point - if you do not like the sound after the add-on, you can basically remove them..

Noob question

Hi. Just wondering if you guys can explain to me what warm sound is? And does smooth mean non ear piercing? I suppose not every abeng accessory shop does x-over mods right? So where to find? BTW I'm in Penang. Guess I'll ask the Penang guys during TT.

haha...this one i can answer... warm means your sound lacking/or not power enough a lot of high frequency sound...hence making the sound sounded 'warm'....  the opposite of warm is bright...and bright is usually ear piercing...

for smooth, it's definitely not ear piercing but i also think the sound might not be natural if too smooth... but personally, i think smooth is nice... :P

dont worry too much about all these terms la..i still don't understand how and when to use the terms at times... just listen and syok sendiri can dee... :P

for ice mod related stuff in penang, u can try to contact iceless...he has a lot of contacts can help u do modding kua..

Golden? Ahhhhhhhh.......where's that ah? I think better ask you in person on the next TT if I can make it.

Thanks for the explanation, kev. You know how it is when you listen to any set ups, like you know its missing something but you cant explain it in words. So now I know, I would prolly like warm and smooth.

Thanks guys.

Convict, I used the same Vishay film caps in my pre-amp and have the same sonic findings as yours.

In the end, I replaced them with WIMA MKP series, yeah! the red ones! I found the Wima caps to be more transparent overall. But if you do have an ear piercing experience, then the Vishay caps would tone the harshness down, at the expense of some transparency.

I would even ask you to go as far as changing the whole Bennic cap to Mundorf ones for the full effect! /70
