Active subwoofers (Opinions please)
« on: August 22, 2007, 02:38:00 AM »
Hi,

What do you guys think of active subwoofers.
No one seems to appreciate them here.
Eg. Infinity Basslink, Blaupunkt Velocity, Alpine etc.

Maybe it offers more bang for buck?
Could it be practical for small hatchbacks?
It's small and light vs. heavy and big (12 inch subbies)?
Could there be budget 8 inch woofers with monoblock (from alpine) that could rival it's price? (assuming active subwoofers cost in the range or rm500-1000)

Thanks in advance.

Due to the sub freq itself, Sub-Bass is the very low bass between 15hz and 60hz that encompasses sound that are often felt more than heard, such as thunder in the distance. These frequencies give the music a sence of power even if they occur infrequently.. Usually active subwoofer as your list wont play as low as 12" & some of them only can plays freq same as Mid Bass. If the freq has been plays by Mid, so why we need to spend on those active subwoofer?

2sens from an active sub owner.
I have an 8" Intersys active sub (80W RMS) under the driver seat of my Suzuki Swift. I got it cause I didn't want to lose the boot to a proper sub. I don't think there's much difference between decent brands. So no point splashing out too much.
Yes you guessed right, nowhere near what a 12" in the boot will do for you. No thunder in the distance. I really miss the ending of My Chemical Romance - Welcome to the Black Parade.

BUT............................ the active sub WILL give you what I think is refered to as hard bass (translated from cantonese). It gives extra kick and complements 6" woofers well. But you'll still need a proper sub in the boot.

You know how low powered subs in the boot of a sedan can hardly be heard but can be felt? Well adding an active sub will improve things somewhat. Oh BTW, I'm kinda a noob and the low powered subs that I refered to are fairly cheap. Not the high end stuff our taikos and gurus play with.

active sub is better than no sub lor...

get it right and you'll get something close to a
set of small home bookshelf speakers sounding.
