diy a-pillar
« on: October 16, 2006, 10:57:50 PM »
1 question....
seem to have 2 way of doing this...
1) use cloth, FB sheets and resin
2)use ready mix, (use to call it kitty hair) or body filler

both can be used rite???
using body filler would be cheaper wor....so need conformation...can the 2nd method be used?

I'm not sure the 2nd method can be used or not, but i'm more acustomed to the first way of doing it, which, IMO, seemed to be stronger if u think about it. ;)

but many audio shops ....use the 2nd way wor for the door panel...seen with my own eyes ....
2nd way is so much cheaper and easily available in  hardware shop.

seen once this guy uses wiremesh to shape then cover with body filler.....
a-pillar for a midrange....

I see... probably poor man's or easy man's way of doing it i guess :P

The 2nd way is kinda used to make the initial stand, but the whole piece i usually end up using cloth and resin and mat.

Well... u can't blame me for using the "traditional" way considering that i'm part of a fiberglass fabrication company(which has nothing to do with cars, it's about corrosion control).

superglwl, the 2nd method can still be used, but, i guess you'll have to make sure that the body-filler adheres and gets compressed nicely so that there's no gaps, else, i think the strength is not there.

XSi, nope, not with corroshield, *but* there's also a corro in the current company :P

in my opinion have to use both.  anyway the kitty stuff is just ready mixed fiber + the other stuff.  body filler is used over the fibre.  but the initial stage is fibre first to get the shape, after that only use body filler and then sand, body filler and then sand, body filler and then sand, until its smooth.  of coz dont forget u have to cure it, let it set and dry, become harden before u start every new stage.

car audio & electronics magazine always show pic by pic method to do this..

Bondo is kinda a filler, the fiberglass wif something is another thing.

Basically, you'll need the fiberglass(with hardener of course) then after getting the shape and when the FB has cured, u'll need to fill up wif bondo to smooth the surface, sand, bondo again, sand, bondo again until you felt it's smooth enough ;D

Resin time.....stupid resin...they should note out ...shake before use.

After fiberglassing...the procedures ...fiberglass mat on the inside of the cloth. didnt take picture coz hand gloves full with resin...remember to wear rubber gloves..must wear.

Me busying with bodyfill...gf help me to take picture.

After body fill....looks like sh1t...i found out if you dont want to have a rough bodyfill...the trick is...put alot less harderner and toast it under 100 watt bulb over night...better like this.

now grind the surface with power drill.

bodyfill again and handsanding and you got it done.

part 2 to be continue.

this type of glossy material ...

but this type of cushion material is good, because under the hot sun it can stretch, if u have time go see KF in Aman Suria, they got some samples and very good quality ones like those used in their Jazz ...

Prepare to wrap the pillar with cloth......
use dunlop CA gum....never fails.

Mark cloth with yellow chalk to make sure wrapping method and area. pinpoint wrapping area with pin.

Apply gum with soft brush evenly....press cloth firmly and heat using hair dryer.

Finished wrapping ...wraping is fairly difficult. hence the tired look. still need to sut holes to fit the driver. pillar from side view.

after install...heres the end result.
